Bursitis

Elbow Bursitis

Along the bony prominence of the elbow posteriorly there is a bursa called the olecranon bursa. Sometimes this bursa can swell due to trauma from a fall, repetitive use, and even infection. Most episodes of bursitis resolve over a period of days to weeks. An infected bursa is a much more serious condition that requires urgent treatment. If you notice swelling, fluid, or pain along the elbow bursa, please make an appointment to see us as we want to help you make a full recovery.

Elbow bursitis

Bursa are small spaces around joints that allow muscles to glide over each other and over bone. Along the bony prominence of the elbow posteriorly there is a bursa called the olecranon bursa. Sometimes this bursa can become inflamed (swollen) due to trauma from a fall, repetitive use, prolonged pressure, and even infection.

Most episodes of bursitis resolve over a period of days to weeks. An infected (septic) bursa is a much more serious condition that requires urgent treatment and sometimes surgery.

If you suspect elbow swelling and pain are due to bursitis, it is important to see a physician. A physician like a sports medicine specialist, can help determine the cause of the swelling and help guide treatment.

Sometimes diagnostic testing, imaging, and medication can be utilized for elbow bursitis. At Sports Health Northwest, we commonly utilize ultrasound imaging to assess the bursa and adjacent structures and specialize in treating  bursitis.
